Furnace and Hot Water Vents

Furnace, and Hot Water Vents:  Most house vents are located on the east or west side of your house about a foot and half feet up from the ground. In the winter accumulated snow can bury the openings to these vents. Sometimes it will not be a big storm that created the situation but strong winds that produce drifting snow. In those cases the snow can be blown into your vent, blocking it, even though the drift is not covering the opening. It is important to check your vents frequently after storms  or winds creating drifting snow. Some people have modified their vents to increase the height of the vent opening from the ground.

Fireplace vents can be blocked as well but to a lesser extent because they are higher off the ground.
